Dr. Luc Derijks is a hospital pharmacist and clinical pharmacologist at Máxima Medical Center, Veldhoven, and Assistant Professor at the School of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism (NUTRIM), Maastricht University/Maastricht UMC+. Within Maastricht UMC+, he collaborates closely with the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Toxicology. His clinical and translational work focuses on personalised medicine in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), aiming to translate pharmacological research into practical and sustainable improvements in patient care. He has authored more than 70 PubMed-indexed publications and has contributed to several national and international guidelines and advisory bodies in the field of IBD and chronic immune-mediated diseases. As Director of Residency Training in both Hospital Pharmacy and Clinical Pharmacology at Máxima Medical Center, he combines patient care, research and education.
Personalised Medicine in IBD: Translating Pharmacological Research into Patient Care
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) pharmacotherapy has evolved rapidly, from conventional immunomodulators to biologicals and targeted therapies. However, translating this expanding therapeutic arsenal into better patient care remains challenging. Clinicians must select the right drug, determine the right dose, monitor effectiveness and safety, and maintain affordability and feasibility within routine care.
This presentation provides an overview of a translational research programme in personalised medicine in IBD, illustrating how pharmacological research can be translated into practical tools, treatment strategies and care innovations. By connecting work on thiopurines, biologicals, precision dosing, healthcare innovation and data-driven clinical decision support, the programme demonstrates how clinical pharmacology can support more personalised and sustainable IBD care.
Rather than highlighting a single study, the presentation follows the broader translational pathway from clinical problem to research question, from evidence generation to clinical implementation, and from individual patient optimisation to improvement of care pathways. By sharing this integrated research and implementation approach, the presentation aims to provide an inspiring example of how clinical pharmacology research can contribute directly to more personalised, effective and sustainable patient care.
