About ACCESS
ACCESS is a not-for-profit organisation established in The Hague in 1986 to encourage, support, assist and facilitate internationals coming to the Netherlands for business, research, or diplomatic posting. It’s primary mission –providing internationals with professional volunteering opportunities while also offering them a chance to grow a local network, use or develop professional skills and gain experience. Together, the more than 130 volunteers, from over 35 countries, work with ACCESS providing no-cost services to internationals across the country through a Helpdesk located in their back-office in The Hague, as well as through the teams working from the expat centres in The Hague, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Leiden and Amstelveen.

Working of ACCESS
Through its Helpdesk and expat centres ACCESS responds to a myriad of questions from the public related to moving to, arriving, living and settling in the Netherlands. Its Counselling Services Network is made up of 21 expat experienced, locally practicing psychologists/therapists who take turns being on-call throughout the year to provide those in need of support, a free referral service the support sought for. The ACCESS Training Network is also made up of entrepreneurs. Many are or have had expatriate experience, and offer an expertise often looked for by internationals. Their popular Childbirth Preparation Courses, given by local entrepreneurs in Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Rotterdam, introduce participants to what they can expect from the Dutch healthcare system, while at the same time offering new parents to be a chance to meet others like them, starting a family far from home. Through HR Support, they assist companies and organisations who employ internationals by providing support to their HR departments and giving presentations about living in the Netherlands to their staff. ACCESS also relies on and works with local entrepreneurs – expat as well as Dutch – who provide services required by the community. And, its quarterly magazine, distributed through many expat centres and international schools focuses on promoting connections between internationals and their host country, encouraging them to discover and reach out to locals – neighbours, services, attractions and events.

ACCESS volunteers
ACCESS consistently maintains a staff of nearly 130 volunteers representing 40+ countries – each one of whom brings to ACCESS their own personal international experiences of living and adjusting to the cultures of countries other than their home country. Approximately 10% of the volunteers are Dutch nationals who have significant international living experience and bring a valuable integration of their experiences with their innate understanding of the Dutch culture. These volunteers are the essence of ACCESS’ understanding of and empathy for the challenges inherent to individual and family integration into a new culture.
