About Yuliya Shakalisava | Founder, CEO EXIT071

Yuliya Shakalisava, founder and CEO of EXIT071, Leiden-based startup developing innovative technology for the analysis of exosomes in diagnostics and therapeutics. Yuliya pursued her PhD in analytical chemistry at Dublin City University and postdoctoral experience at Institute Curie in Paris. To follow her dreams of making an impact with cutting edge technology, Yuliya moved to Leiden to work on a “mission impossible” – to Catch the Exosomes. It is the innovation potential of this project that intrigued her and motivated her most. Yuliya put in place and led multidisciplinary strategic partnerships of technologists, clinicians and industry experts, secured 1 million euro funding for the fundamental development of the technology and did the crucial hands-on work in the lab. 

The success of this academic project at Leiden University provided solid grounds for the startup. EXIT071 is the direct result of Yuliya’s academic research, life-long passion for science, vision for impact and a supportive ecosystem of Leiden BioScience Park. She has now secured the initial 500K euro proof of concept finances. Yuliya’s is fully dedicated to catching exosomes and bringing this deep-tech innovation to the market.

Yuliya has 15 years of international experience in research, management, and fundraising and was awarded Marie Skłodowska Curie Fellowship and WomenTechEU grant for promising women-led stratups 2022. Yuliya takes every opportunity to inspire curious women to pursue science and entrepreneurship and follow their dreams, no matter how impossible they seem.


About EXIT071

EXIT071 is a spinoff from Leiden University, developing innovative technology for the analysis of exosomes for diagnostics and therapeutics.Recently discovered exosomes are the nanosized particles made by all cells to send messages to each other. Exosomes contain information about the health or disease state of organs and present in all body fluids (blood, urine, cerebro-spinal fluid). They have huge potential for non-invasive, liquid biopsy diagnostics in a broad range of fields, such as oncology, lung diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and prenatal diagnostics. The therapeutic potential of exosomes is currently being exploited by the flourishing exosome industry for tissue repair and as a drug delivery mechanism.

EXIT071 offers a proprietary technology platform to measure exosomes in patients’ samples and production processes of exosome therapeutics with high precision, speed and high throughput. Our goal is to accelerate exosome therapeutics development and implementation of non-invasive diagnostics in routine clinical practice. Read more
